American culture is built on a 1600’s misconception about human beings — that people are separate entities with no real connection to each other. The mainstream “wisdom” is “every man for himself.”
My woman-wisdom says that all human beings are deeply connected with each other. Likewise, we are deeply connected with the “web of life” — the cooperative interplay of so many species’ lives, that makes up local ecosystems.
The climate emergency has been foisted upon us by the “Big Energy” fossil fuel corporations. The oil companies have known since the 1970’s that their product would cause huge, disruptive changes in the world climate system. Yet they continue to sell oil and to look for more of it.
There is another misconception: that our individual buying choices can bring enough pressure on the corporations, to stop the climate emergency. Actually, it is almost irrelevant which item we buy or don’t buy.
To disempower the corporations, we are going to have to put aside our “individual” way of thinking and join together in a groundswell of determination that they cannot withstand.
Musicians and writers can help this happen by singing and writing about the deep, lifelong connections that happen when we work together on projects that matter to us. Here is a video I made about a musician helping our movement:
